Good news and bad news

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 4:44 PM
Good news: Made it home. Made all my connections on-time and on schedule, and even got to sample Summit Pale Ale on tap while waiting for my flight in Minneapolis/St.Paul. My flight from Minneapolis to Cincinnati was on a Delta Connection flight that looked like it was two limousines cobbled together with wings on either side. My flight attendant for this particular flight reminded me of Joy from My Name is Earl both in accent and appearance. While In Cincinnati, I had a chili salad at Gold Star Chili, which was pretty much the equivalent of a nachos supreme. Not bad. Delta flight from Cincinnati to JFK was ahead of schedule, so we landed at 10:10 instead of 10:40. Which leads me to...

Bad news: Because we landed early, we had to wait for the flight previous to us to take off and abandon the gate, so we sat on the ground until 10:40. THEN, the towing mechanism broke, so we had to wait for them to repair that. THEN, the ramp mechanism broke, so we had to wait for them to repair that. Long story short, we didn't exit the plane until 11:20PM or so. THEN, when I get down to baggage claim...wait for it...wait for it...my luggage isn't there!

Turns out my luggage never made my connecting flight from Minneapolis! So now I sit here, waiting for the delivery guys to call me to deliver my baggage, which can be anywhere up until 10PM tonight.

On the bright side, I'm home so I have clothes and toiletries to use, and at least I had my laptop bag with me on the flight.

Need I remind you: NEVER fly Delta if it can be avoided, or you'll end up like Ian.

EDIT: I'm still waiting on the bags. Apparently my bag wasn't picked up until 2PM, so now I shall not receive until tomorrow. -_______-

How was this not a day of mourning?

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 1:31 AM
I am sorry to say that I did not hear of this until now - but Norman Borlaug, Nobel Peace Prize winner and most likely the single greatest savior of human life that world has ever seen, has died. He passed away September 12, of lymphoma.

The man was responsible for directly or indirectly saving over a billion lives. That is one times ten to the ninth - 1,000,000,000. No other hero in history has come close to his achievement.

Penn & Teller, in all seriousness, referred to him as the "Greatest Human Being That Ever Lived". I cannot disagree with their assessment.

If any man is worth mourning, it is him.
I wake up at 4AM, check my flight status, all is well. Shower, shave, brush teeth, get ready to pack computer, check flight, all's good. Get in cab, check in, go through security, look at board, all's good. Board flight...board flight...yeah, we've got a problem.

First they tell us the flight has been delayed two more hours due to JFK not being ready yet, so we debark the plane, grab breakfast, and wait until it's boarding time.

I finish my bacon egg and cheese English muffin...and there's a new announcement. Flight has been canceled entirely due to all the international flights being rerouted to JFK, as DC, Boston, Baltimore and so-on are still fubar. So I grab my luggage, take another cab back to Bellevue, and check their website. Same flight I was on is still scheduled to take off at 9:35PM tonight, making me believe Delta may have canceled ours to keep the flight here for tonight.

I take a nap due to sever exhaustion, and wake up around 11:30. I call Delta, and get continued busy signals for an hour. I turn to Twitter to voice my anguish, and a nice fella gives me a different number to call, which gets me through to someone in fifteen minutes. Thanks, Twitter guy!

The only option available to a lowly Coach flier like myself is to take three different flights tomorrow to get back to NYC. Seattle to Minneapolis. Minneapolis to Cincinnati. Cincinnati to JFK. Flying begins at 8:35AM, I land in NYC at 10:40PM. But at least it's a genuine way to get back home before tomorrow's over. And big-ups to [info]reverend_dave for offering to pick me up at the airport.

If anything else occurs to derail this romp through three different timezones, I'll let everyone know.

Cross your fingers, people. I need all the luck I can manage.

P.S. Never flying Delta again. kthnxbye

Curse you, weather!!! *shakes fist*

If things had gone my way, I would be getting ready to hail a cab over to Seattle Airport right now for my 12:45PM flight back to NYC. Instead, the snow Gods be angry, so Delta decided to cancel my flight YESTERDAY as a precaution. Rebooked myself on the red eye as an alternative. Said red eye has now been delayed two hours and fifteen minutes, so now I'm leaving Seattle at midnight PST, and landing in NYC at 8:23 AM EST. For now.

Details as they continue to develop. I WANNA GO HOME, DANGIT!!!

EDIT: Make that SEVEN HOUR DELAY. Now I'm taking off at 5:30AM, and landing at 1:54PM. This is getting more annoying by the second.

EDIT 2: Now it's takeoff at 6:25AM, landing at 2:49PM EST. Grrr.

So close. So unbelievably close. 2/3 done with the essay that will, in all likelihood, be the last essay I ever write for Suffolk.

Sleep for five hours. Wake up, finish, present to teacher 4 days early...hopefully win.

My friend at work quit today, which kinda sucked.

WHATEVER

I GOT NO TIME FOR THIS SHIT

I SLEEP THE SLEEP OF THE JUST!
The song made him laugh.

It wasn't really funny, but it was such a bizarre reminder of another time. Another life, really. Something he'd cried over a long time ago. What else, then, was he to do but laugh?

His feet twisted in the grass, and he raised his arm to the sky. The moon shone off of his skin as his body flowed in harmony to the rhythm that rose from the town. The song was in his blood, and he was a part of the song.

Finally, he bent his head back and shouted. It was deep, primal yell that seemed to echo into the stars as the music faded away.

He fell on his back, panting. For a moment he laid still, feeling the song recede into his memories.

He picked himself up and walked home.
